The author, Emily Lierman (eventually becoming Emily Bates in marriage to Dr. Bates), worked with Dr. Bates for a period of twenty years, first in experimental work, then working alongside him at the Harlem Hospital clinic in the 1920s. She learned Bates's methods and adapted them to each individual case, surprising even Bates in the amazing results she achieved with some patients.

This book is an autobiographical account by Emily Lierman of the time spent treating patients on the free clinic days she and Dr. Bates held at the Harlem Hospital three times per week, then once per week after they left the Harlem Hospital. She descries countless cases with various vision problems and diseases of the eye, and the benefit they obtained using the simple techniques of the Bates method.
